Phototherapy

What is it?

Phototherapy is a treatment prescribed by a dermatologist that has been used for many years to manage a variety of skin conditions including:

  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema (dermatitis)
  • Generalised itch
  • Vitiligo
  • Mycosis Fungoides
  • Other rare inflammatory skin conditions such as Lichen Planus and Pityriasis Rosea.

The whole body phototherapy treatment is ultraviolet B of a single wavelength, known as narrow band UVB.

What to expect at your appointment

Treatment takes only a few minutes and is performed 2-3 times a week. You will be required to undress to your underwear, put on protective goggles and stand inside the cabinet while the UV light shines on your skin. After the treatment, you can dress and return to work, school or home.

Phototherapy is safe in pregnancy and when breastfeeding. If you have a valid Medicare card and referral letter most treatments will receive the full Medicare rebate. Overseas patients without Medicare may be able to claim on their travel insurance.
