Hyperhidrosis (Excessive sweating)

What is it?

We all sweat. It’s our body’s way of cooling down and removing some chemicals from our system. It’s OK to sweat a lot when exercising, or if you are too hot or frightened. It’s also normal to sweat more as a teenager or around menopause. However, some people sweat too much and may drip sweat even if they are not exercising, hot or frightened. For these people, sweating can be a problem that is hard to live with.

What causes it?

Often, there is no cause for this condition. Sometimes, other health issues such as an overactive thyroid or diabetes can produce sweating. Some medicines increase sweating as a side effect.

What are the treatment options?

There are a lot of simple tips to help you live with sweating, such as:

  • Bathing with soap and water once or twice a day
  • Applying a deodorant with antiperspirant, including at night before bed
  • Wearing clothing made of a breathable material like cotton, wool, silk and linen
  • Letting your shoes dry out completely and changing socks during the day if they get sweaty.

If sweating is affecting your daily life and simple tips are not enough, a doctor can help. There are a range of treatments available that may be suitable for you and the location of your sweating. These include:

  • Prescription antiperspirants
  • Iontophoresis: This is a water bath machine that sends a weak electric current through the skin affected
  • Injections: These injections temporarily block the nerves that make you sweat. (Some patients may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for underarm treatment)
  • Medicines
  • Electromagnetic therapy
  • Surgery.

What to expect at your appointment

We will ask about your experience of excessive sweating, what treatments you are using now and previous treatments you have tried. We will also ask questions about your past and current health. Your skin will be examined carefully.

Blood tests are sometimes needed before treatment starts if there are concerns that underlying conditions may be present. A discussion about the treatment choices suitable for you and your sweating will help you decide upon a management plan.
