Psoriasis

Psoriasis can start at any age but most commonly starts in the teenage years, which can affect self-esteem. You may need to try different combinations of treatments to find what works best for you and this can change over time.

What is it?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes skin cells to grow too quickly, producing thick white or red patches of skin. These can be small or large and are usually scaly. Patches (also called plaques) are most commonly found on the knees, elbows, scalp, feet and lower back.

What causes it?

Psoriasis occurs when the immune system overreacts in the skin, producing inflammation and flaking. You may notice that your skin will worsen at certain times, such as a change in environment, infections, stress and some medications. Psoriasis can run in families.

What are the symptoms?

There are different types of psoriasis so symptoms can vary. The major symptoms are dry, scaly, raised red patches that can be itchy. Some people are also affected by swollen, tender and painful joints. Symptoms can come and go spontaneously even without treatment.

What are the treatment options?

Many cases are mild needing only good skin care, moisturising creams and shampoos from the chemist. If your psoriasis is not able to be managed with over-the-counter treatments, doctors can help with medicated creams or oral medication. In Australia, dermatologists can also prescribe ultraviolet light and newer treatments including biologic medicines.

What to expect at your appointment

We will ask about your experience of psoriasis, what creams you are using now and previous treatments you have tried. We will also ask questions about your past and current health. Your skin will be examined carefully for the features of psoriasis. Usually, no specific tests will be needed to diagnose psoriasis, but blood tests may be needed to monitor some medications.
